Installing shelves onto plasterboard requires a different approach to solid masonry walls because the wall itself cannot support weight in the same way as brick or stone.

Our shelves for plasterboard walls use specialist concealed support systems designed specifically for lighter wall types. This includes adjustable Hafele concealed brackets paired with Gripit plasterboard fixings to help distribute weight more evenly across the wall surface. Our Gripit fixings expand behind the plasterboard to create a stronger and more reliable anchor point while maintaining a clean floating finish once installed.

Shelves are suitable for plasterboard thicknesses between 9mm and 15mm, and in many cases there is no need to locate timber studs thanks to the specialist fixing system used.

How Much Weight Can Shelves for Plasterboard Walls Hold?

Weight capacity will depend on the wall condition, fixing method, shelf size and how weight is distributed across the shelf. As a general guide, plasterboard shelving can typically support up to 20kg when installed correctly using suitable fixings. This includes the weight of the shelf itself.

For heavier storage, fixing into timber studs may still be recommended where possible.

For more traditional or industrial-inspired interiors, oak shelves with brackets and rustic shelves with brackets may offer a more structured look while still working well on plasterboard walls when installed correctly.

Shelves for Plasterboard Walls: Care & Maintenance

Shelves installed onto plasterboard walls require very little ongoing maintenance once fitted correctly. Regular dusting with a soft cloth is usually enough for everyday care. Shelves finished with wax or oil may occasionally benefit from maintenance to help preserve the finish over time.

As with all natural timber products, small variations in grain and appearance are completely normal and help contribute to the character of the shelf.
