Standard thickness is 32mm, with depths and lengths available to suit most window styles. Allow for a 20–30mm overhang beyond the finished wall for the best visual balance.

Edge profiles

Bathrooms & kitchens

  • Allow for a 3–4mm expansion gap around all sides of the board.
  • Fix using adhesive or brackets, depending on the wall type.
  • If you have chosen an unfinished option, seal the board thoroughly with oil before fitting, especially in high-moisture areas.
  • Avoid exposing newly finished boards to water for at least five days while curing.

Maintenance & Care

  • Re-oil once or twice a year, depending on exposure.
  • Wipe spills immediately, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Avoid leaving wet plant pots or metal tins directly on the sill.

Our oak window sills can be used when replacing existing window boards as part of a renovation or room update. The existing board will need to be removed or the installation planned around the existing window construction, depending on the project. We recommend taking accurate measurements once the area is ready and confirming the fitting method before ordering.

How do I measure for a new oak window sill?

Measure the required length and depth of the finished window board rather than relying solely on the dimensions of the window opening. Remember to account for any projection beyond the wall and any additional width you want at either side. Older properties aren't always perfectly square, so take measurements at several points before ordering or speak to your installer if you're unsure.

How far should an oak window sill overhang the wall?

There isn't one required overhang for every interior window sill. The amount will depend on the window reveal, wall construction and the appearance you're trying to achieve. A modest projection can create a defined edge without making the board feel oversized. If you're replacing an existing sill, its dimensions can provide a useful starting point.

Can you make an oak window sill to my exact measurements?

We manufacture our oak window sills in-house and can produce bespoke sizes for windows that don't suit our standard options. Should I choose an unfinished or oiled oak window sill?

Choose unfinished oak if you'd like to apply your own suitable finish or match the sill with other timber already in the room. Our oiled option is ideal if you'd prefer the finishing to be completed before your window board arrives. We use Rubio Monocoat to protect the timber while bringing out the natural colour and grain of the European oak.

Do oak window sills need to be sealed or oiled?

Unfinished oak should be suitably protected after installation to help preserve the timber and make the surface easier to maintain. Choose a finishing product suitable for interior oak and follow the manufacturer's preparation, application and curing instructions. Particular care should be taken in areas where the sill could regularly encounter moisture or condensation.

Can oak window sills be used in kitchens and bathrooms?

Oak window sills can be used in rooms where humidity and occasional moisture are considerations, provided the timber is appropriately finished and maintained. Water shouldn't be allowed to sit on the surface, and condensation should be wiped away rather than left to soak into the timber. Will my oak window sill match other oak in my home?

European oak naturally varies in grain, tone and character, so an exact match between separate pieces of timber can't be guaranteed.
