Box Beams
Otherwise known as hollow beams and faux beams, box beams are made by connecting sections of oak or pine to form a hollow structure that looks just like solid timber.
A preferred choice for interiors, these false oak beams offer an elegant timber effect, while also being easier to install than heavy solid beams.
Designed to cover RSJ (Rolled Steel Joist) beams and other unsightly lintels, fake oak beams offer a desirable blend of practicality and aesthetic appeal.

High Quality RSJ Covers
Offered in oak and pine varieties, our faux oak beams are manufactured specifically to imitate solid structural oak beams. Made from high-grade wood sourced from sustainable sources, these oak beam covers will provide a classic aesthetic while offering some protection to your home’s structural elements.
Why Choose a Box Beam?
Lightweight Construction
Weighing far less than solid structural beams, an RSJ oak and pine beam cover allow for easy handling and installation. They are a practical choice for retrofit projects or rooms without structural support.
Cost Savings Assured
Making more efficient use of wood and being relatively easy to install, faux oak beams are very cost-effective.
A Versatile Choice
Easily fabricated into any length, depth, or style, false wooden beam covers are more versatile than their solid heavyweight alternatives. Designed to conceal unsightly structural elements, these decorative oak beams are suitable for both traditional and contemporary schemes.
Types of Box Beams
Our box beams are available in either oak or pine designs, with a variety of finishing options available.
Effectively imitating solid structural oak beams, our false oak beam covers are suited to heritage and contemporary homes. With live knots and grain preserved in the exterior, these oak beams have a completely natural appearance.
While our oak box beams are limited to fairly short length boards, pine box beams can be manufactured up to a length of 5m. As such, they’re an excellent, cost-effective alternative to oak.
Style and Finish Options
Both our oak and pine wood beam covers are available in the full range of finishes to match existing shelves, fireplace beams, and furniture from the Traditional Beams collection.
Rustic and weathered colours such as Rugger Brown or Jacobean are particularly well suited to traditional spaces.
Lighter colours, such as White or Antique Pine, are better choices for a more contemporary look.
The addition of wax will seal and protect the wood beam box, leaving a velvety feel that ages gracefully over time.
Common Uses
Steel beam covers may be fitted to keep RSJs well hidden, boxing in steel beams, and potentially concealing pipes and cables.
Naturally appealing, false pine and oak beams can also be seen as decorative ceiling features, adding visual interest without the challenges of heavy, solid timber.
Besides covering steel, decorative box beams may be fitted as:
- Vertical and horizontal wall framing
- Mantels and shelves
- Coverage for other flaws and imperfections
Combined with oak fireplace and window beams, these oak RSJ covers can provide a sense of visual cohesion.
However, they should never be relied on for structural support, nor should they be fitted externally due to the risk of expansion and warping.
Installation and Maintenance Guidance
Being lighter than their solid oak alternatives, hollow beams can be installed with relative ease. Just be aware that the steelwork building regulations may specify the need to fit an interior layer of fire-rated plasterboard before adding the beam box.
No matter which design you choose, we’ll provide suitable wooden plugs to help you mount your beam cover securely.
As with other pine and oak pieces in the Traditional Beams collection, regular maintenance will also be vital.
Simply wipe off any dust or debris from the beam cover after installation. For ongoing maintenance, the beams can be sanded and waxed as needed. However, in most cases, the occasional wipe down should suffice.
Box Beams
FAQ's
What is a box beam?
A hollow box beam is a wooden decorative fascia that can be applied over the top of bulkheads and RSJs throughout the home. They serve no structural purpose, but provide a unique aesthetic that is more akin to the structural elements of cottages and period homes.
How do I cover an RSJ with a box beam?
Depending on the beam you buy, we’ll include various fixings to be used to keep the RSJ cover secure. Thankfully, our innovative design makes the installation process easy. Simply drill out the holes for the fixings, place them in the wall, and offer the beam cover up to it. Then, screw through the cover to secure it in place.
Can box beams be made to custom sizes?
Absolutely! These decorative wooden beams can be made to measure in various sizes. The easy re-sizing makes them a great choice for various building projects.
