Enhance Your Space with an Oak Fireplace Mantel
Whether you want to preserve the traditional appeal of a period property or create a living room centrepiece, there’s an oak mantel to suit. With its unique grain patterning, an open fire or wood burning stove mantel will undoubtedly enhance your home’s natural character and warmth. Go ahead and explore our collection of oak fireplace mantels, today.
Why Choose an Oak Mantel?
Made for Longevity
Exceedingly strong and durable, a rustic mantel shelf is sure to pass the test of time. Resistant to warping, it can be relied on for the support of weighty household decorations, while looking great in the process.
Resistant to Fire
Made for positioning directly above the fireplace, you needn’t worry about the compatibility with wood-burning stoves or log burners. Each one of our mantelpieces has heat-resistant properties, keeping it safe from excessive warmth.
Choice of Finishes
Offered in a variety of oak colour finishes, an oak mantlepiece also has an undeniable aesthetic appeal. The natural grain and colour variations will add warmth and elegance to any room.
Sustainably Sourced Timber
We make exclusive use of sustainably sourced timber in the shaping of each oak mantelpiece. We also promise to plant a tree for every £50 that you spend with us.
Varied Styles
Whether looking for a straight or gently arched wooden mantle, you’re sure to find your perfect match in the Traditional Beams collection.
Also suitable for placement above doors and windows, these oak metals are offered in made-to-measure sizes, with each shaped beam being carefully worked to give the appearance of a natural edge.
Some of our oak mantlepieces are also chosen for their reclaimed characteristics, with the addition of stressed edges and textured surfaces for a rustic look.
Practical Guidance
As mentioned, our oak mantle pieces come in made-to-measure sizes, according to your specific requests.
However, particular care should be taken when selecting a fireplace oak mantel that extends 3-6 inches beyond each side of the firebox.
Depth should be chosen in proportion to the room, leaving enough space for the décor and not overcrowding the wall.
If you’re in any doubt over the shelf sizing, then please send us a message, and perhaps an image of your fireplace, for advice.
All of our fully finished oak mantelpieces, apart from the 7.5"x5.5" size, come with fixings. We also provide suitable fixing methods, depending on the size of your chosen wooden mantelpiece.
Finishes and Customisation
We offer a variety of natural oiled, waxed, stained, and lacquered oak mantel shelves to suit different room aesthetics.
Penetrating deep into the oak, our stains will ensure the enduring colourful character of your oak mantle shelf. The waxes and seal will ensure lasting protection, with a desirable velvety feel.
You can take your choice from oak mantlepiece colour finishes such as:
- White
- Light
- Danish oil
- Antique pine
- Medium oak
- Rugger brown
- Walnut
- Jacobean
- Black
Of course, each interior space is unique. That’s why we offer engraving, bevelled edges, and chamfered corners for a distinctive appearance.
Maintaining Your Oak Mantel
Regular maintenance is vital when it comes to protecting and ensuring the lasting appeal of your wooden mantel shelf. The oak mantelpiece will ideally be lightly sanded and re-coated every few months to ensure utmost protection.
In between major maintenance, you should regularly dust and wipe your mantel with a clean damp cloth. Just be sure to not soak the wood, as this could cause damage and/or swelling. Treatment and re-oiling are also essential for the preservation of the wood's condition and the prevention of drying or cracking.
You can maintain the natural beauty and durability of your oak mantel shelf with hardwax oil, Danish oil, or beeswax polish.
Oak Mantels
FAQ's
Can oak mantels be installed above wood-burning stoves or log burners safely?
Our oak mantels have been designed for easy installation. However, you might want to call on some support for the fitting of a large and weighty fireplace or log burner mantle.
Essential tools for the job include a drill, spirit level, pencil, tape measure, and hammer. As mentioned, the 7.5″x5.5″ beams also come complete with fixing-kit add-ons.
The first step will be to decide on the positioning of the mantel, with a level line being applied no bigger than the fitting. You’ll then need to mark and transfer the correct measurements onto the wall.
Holes should be drilled for insertion of the wall plugs and hanging of the wooden mantel shelf.
How durable is a wooden mantel compared to other materials?
We’re so confident in the durability of our wooden mantels that we offer a lifetime guarantee. If any faults develop due to a manufacturing defect (which is unlikely), we’d be more than happy to help reach a resolution. With that said, each mantel is designed to last for many years, and is not only made with the finest quality wood we can find, but protected with a lacquer over the top of the wood itself.
Can I match my oak mantel with other oak fireplace beams or surrounds?
Absolutely! Our wooden mantelpieces are offered in a range of finishes to match other oak fireplace beams and surrounds. Simply choose your desired stye and finish, and we’ll deliver an oak mantel that matches your vision.
What styles of oak mantel are available?
From the rustic arched oak fireplace beam to the classic oak window beam, we offer mantels in a wide variety of styles.
Available in an assortment of characterful finishes, these oak mantels will perfectly complement the solid oak shelves, window boards, and table tops in the Traditional Beams collection.
