What Are Oak Floating Shelves?
Oak floating shelves are solid wooden shelves designed to appear fixed directly to the wall without visible brackets or supports. The concealed fixing system creates a cleaner and more minimal look while still providing strong and practical storage.
They are commonly used throughout the home, including:
- Living rooms and alcoves
- Kitchens and dining spaces
- Bathrooms and cloakrooms
- Bedrooms and home offices
Because the brackets are hidden within the shelf itself, floating shelves tend to feel lighter visually than traditional shelving. This makes them particularly useful in smaller spaces or interiors where a cleaner finish is preferred.
For customers looking for a more industrial or traditional appearance, visible support styles such as oak shelves with brackets may be a better fit.
Choosing the Right Oak Floating Shelf
The best oak shelf for your space will depend on how it will be used, the style of the room and the type of wall it’s being installed onto.
Size and Proportion
Getting the proportions right makes a big difference to how the shelf sits within the room.
Deeper shelves are often better suited to practical storage, books or kitchens, while slimmer shelves tend to work well for styling and decorative use. In smaller rooms, oversized shelves can quickly feel heavy against the wall, whereas larger spaces often benefit from chunkier profiles that feel more balanced within the room.
Our shelves are available in a wide range of standard sizes, starting from compact 30cm shelves for smaller alcoves and tighter spaces through to larger 213cm shelves designed for feature walls and wider installations.
If you’re creating shelving within alcoves, it’s usually worth considering the surrounding wall width and ceiling height before deciding on shelf depth and thickness.
Rustic vs Contemporary Shelves
Different shelf styles can completely change the overall feel of the space.
Rustic oak floating shelves feature more texture, visible grain and natural character, making them well suited to farmhouse kitchens, cottage interiors and more traditional spaces. Cleaner, more contemporary shelves have a more refined finish and tend to work better in modern interiors where a simpler look is preferred.
Most of our shelves are produced using kiln-dried European oak for improved stability and consistency, while selected air-dried options are also available for a more rustic and character-led finish.
For a more industrial or traditional shelving style, rustic shelves with brackets can provide a heavier and more structured appearance.
Wall Types and Installation
Wall type is one of the most important practical considerations when choosing floating shelves. All of our shelves are supplied with heavy-duty concealed brackets designed to create a clean floating appearance while still providing strong support.
Solid masonry walls generally allow for the strongest fixing and can typically support up to 35kg across two fixings, including the weight of the shelf itself.
For plasterboard walls, we recommend fixing into timber studs wherever possible. If this isn’t possible, specialist fixings may be required depending on the shelf size and intended load. We also offer dedicated shelves for plasterboard walls designed specifically for lighter wall types.
Weight should always be distributed evenly across the shelf, particularly on longer or deeper profiles.
How Much Weight Can Oak Floating Shelves Hold?
The amount of weight a floating shelf can hold will depend on the shelf size, wall type and installation method.
On solid walls, our concealed brackets provide strong support for everyday use, making the shelves suitable for books, kitchenware, plants and decorative items.
For plasterboard walls, weight capacity will depend on the fixing method used and whether the shelf can be secured into timber studs. As a general guide, plasterboard installations should usually carry lighter loads than solid masonry walls.
Shelf depth and how weight is distributed across the shelf will also affect overall performance. Longer shelves carrying concentrated weight in one area may require additional consideration during installation.
Oak Shelves: Finishes and Colour Options
We offer a wide range of finishes to suit both modern and traditional interiors.
Our standard finishes include:
- White
- Light Oak
- Antique Pine
- Medium Oak
- Rugger Brown
- Walnut
- Jacobean
- Black
All finishes are applied using high-quality stains, waxes and oils designed to enhance the natural grain while protecting the surface for everyday use.
Lighter finishes tend to work well in contemporary interiors and smaller spaces, while darker finishes create more depth and contrast within the grain, particularly in rustic or more traditional settings.
Because every shelf is made from real oak, there will always be natural variation in grain, knots and tone between pieces.
Solid Oak vs Veneered Shelves
All of our shelves are made from solid oak rather than veneered or hollow materials. Solid oak has a more substantial feel once installed and provides greater durability over time. The depth of grain and natural variation within the timber also create a more authentic finish that cannot be fully replicated with manufactured alternatives.
As a natural material, oak will continue to settle slightly within its environment over time. Small changes in appearance, including light movement or surface character, are completely normal and part of what gives solid timber its individuality.
For customers looking for a lighter or more cost-effective alternative, our pine floating shelves offer a softer appearance while still providing the same clean floating design. Pine shelves are often chosen for painted interiors, Scandinavian-inspired spaces and rooms where a lighter visual finish is preferred.
Where Can Oak Floating Shelves Be Used?
Oak floating shelves can be used throughout the home, both as practical storage and as part of the overall design of a room.
They are commonly used in living rooms and alcoves, where they help introduce storage without making the wall feel overcrowded. In kitchens, floating shelves are often used for everyday storage or open shelving displays, while sink shelves in bathrooms and cloakrooms benefit from the cleaner and more minimal appearance.
Floating shelves also work well alongside other oak features within the home, helping create a more cohesive look across different spaces.
They are often paired with:
- Oak beams within feature rooms
- Oak fireplace beams around fireplaces and media walls
- Oak window beams above windows and openings
- Sink shelves within bathrooms and cloakrooms
For customers looking for more visible support or a heavier industrial look, oak shelves with brackets may be a better alternative.
Oak Floating Shelf Installation
Oak floating shelves can be installed onto most wall types, but the installation method should always suit the surface they’re being fixed to.
Solid masonry walls provide the strongest fixing and are generally the most straightforward for floating shelf installation. Plasterboard walls may require specialist fixings or fixing directly into timber studs where possible. Shelf depth, wall condition and intended weight load should always be considered before installation.
If you’re unsure which shelf type is best for your wall, our shelves for plasterboard walls collection includes options specifically designed for lighter wall types.
Oak Floating Shelf Care and Maintenance
Solid oak floating shelves are generally low maintenance once installed.
Regular dusting with a soft cloth is usually enough to keep the surface clean. For shelves finished with wax or oil, occasional reapplication may help maintain the colour and protect the surface over time.
Like all natural timber, oak may continue to show small changes in appearance as it settles within its environment. Minor movement, grain variation and light surface character are all part of working with real wood and help contribute to the shelf’s natural appearance.

Oak Floating Shelves
FAQ's
What is a floating oak shelf?
A floating oak shelf is a solid wood shelf that mounts using hidden brackets, giving it a sleek "floating" appearance on your wall.
Are your oak floating shelves made from real oak?
Yes – all of our shelves are crafted from 100% solid European oak. We never use veneers or laminates. We source our timber from trusted sawmills across Europe and have built strong relationships with suppliers who consistently deliver high-quality oak.
Sustainability is at the heart of what we do. All of our timber comes from FSC or PEFC-certified sources, ensuring it’s responsibly harvested. We also plant more trees than we use - giving back more than we take, read more in our Eco Policy.
Can I use oak floating shelves in a bathroom?
Our standard oak floating shelves are made from solid European oak and are finished with protective oils or waxes that offer some resistance to everyday moisture. However, for use in bathrooms or high-humidity areas, we recommend selecting one of our oak sink basin shelves or contacting us to request a moisture-resistant finish.
These shelves are specially treated to better withstand the humidity and occasional splashes common in bathrooms. If you're planning to install a shelf near a sink or in a steamy environment, let us know - we’ll ensure it’s properly sealed for long-term durability.
What fixings are included?
Our solid oak shelves come with fixings for either solid masonry walls or plasterboard walls, depending on the product you select.
We have products made especially for plasterboard walls, so if you are fixing solely into plasterboard walls, please make sure the product says "for plasterboard walls" in the title.

Do you offer custom sizes?
Our solid oak shelves come with fixings for either solid masonry walls or plasterboard walls, depending on the product you select.
Yes! Whether you need a small oak floating shelf or an extra-long one, we offer bespoke cuts and finishes. Just get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
What’s the weight limit for these shelves?
The weight capacity depends on both the wall type and the depth of the shelf. As a general rule, two fixings into a solid masonry wall can support up to 35kg, including the weight of the shelf. For plasterboard walls, we recommend a maximum load of 20kg when using appropriate fixings.
Where will the fixings be positioned?
The number of fixings your shelf will have will depend on the length chosen.
- Shelves under 4ft will come with 2 fixing points.
- Shelves 4ft-5ft will come with 3 fixing points.
- Shelves 5.5ft-6ft will come with 4 fixing points.
- Shelves 6.5-7.5ft will come with 5 fixing points.
Fixings are usually around 5" from each end and then any subsequent fixings evenly spaced between. (This is not guaranteed)
If you need to make sure the fixings are in a suitable position to enable you to fit to timber studs, please get in touch and we will be happy to adjust fixing positions on your order.
Will oak floating shelves work on my wall?
Our solid oak floating shelves come with 12mm concealed fixings as standard, designed for secure installation into timber studs or solid walls.
For hollow or plasterboard walls, simply choose our plasterboard-specific option from the product range. This version includes specialist fixings suitable for plasterboard between 9–15mm thick with a cavity behind, ensuring a safe and reliable fit.
What’s the difference between oak floating shelves and bracket shelves?
Floating shelves use concealed supports for a cleaner appearance, while bracket shelves feature visible supports beneath the shelf itself.
Do oak floating shelves come with fixings?
Our shelves are supplied with concealed fixing brackets designed for floating shelf installation.
Can oak floating shelves be installed onto plasterboard walls?
They can, although the correct fixing method is important. In some cases, fixing into timber studs or using specialist fixings may be recommended.
What size oak floating shelf do I need?
This will depend on how the shelf will be used and the size of the room. Deeper shelves are often better for practical storage, while slimmer shelves tend to suit styling and decorative use.
