Description

Our oak beam covers offer a practical and attractive way to conceal steel RSJs and structural beams while bringing the natural beauty of real oak into your interior.

These hollow oak box beams are designed to wrap around or clad steel beams, transforming an exposed RSJ into a feature that suits both traditional and contemporary spaces. The finished look gives the appearance of a substantial solid oak ceiling beam, without the weight or installation complexity of structural timber.

Our oak RSJ covers are crafted from carefully selected character-grade European oak, showcasing the natural grain, knots and texture you would expect from genuine oak beams. Character-grade oak contains small sound and live knots, with a maximum diameter of 30mm.

Every oak box beam is made to your exact specifications. When calculating the size required, please note that building regulations may require steelwork to be covered with fire-rated plasterboard before fitting the oak box beam. The diagram illustrates this common installation method.

Each order includes oak plugs and touch-up finish for a seamless final result.

We also offer a full range of colour options, making it easy to match existing shelves, oak fireplace beams or furniture previously purchased from us.

Made-to-Measure Oak RSJ Covers

Most projects require bespoke sizing, which is why our oak RSJ covers are made to measure. This ensures the beam cladding fits neatly around your existing steel beam while maintaining clean lines and accurate proportions.

When ordering an oak beam cover, the most important measurements are the external dimensions of the finished beam and the internal clearance required to accommodate the RSJ.

Typical sizing considerations include:

  • Internal width and height required to fit around the steel beam
  • Desired external beam proportions for visual impact
  • Ceiling height and room scale
  • Installation method and fixing points

Bespoke sizing allows joiners and installers to achieve a precise fit, ensuring the finished beam looks intentional rather than simply covering steelwork.

Delivery & Installation

Each oak RSJ cover is typically manufactured to order to ensure accurate sizing and a high-quality finish.

Manufacturing

Our oak beams are produced by our own skilled craftsmen using traditional woodworking methods in our Yorkshire warehouse. This ensures every beam cover maintains the natural character and quality expected from real oak products.

Installation

Compared with solid oak beams, hollow beam covers are significantly easier to install.

Installation typically involves:

  1. Creating a timber fixing frame around the steel beam

  2. Sliding the oak beam cover into position

  3. Fixing discreetly through the sides or top

  4. Finishing joints if required

Many builders and joiners install these beams regularly, though competent DIY installers can also complete the installation with the correct preparation.

FAQ's

What is an Oak Beam Cover?

An oak beam cover is a hollow timber beam designed to conceal structural steel beams such as RSJs. It provides the appearance of a solid oak beam while hiding the underlying steel structure.

Can This Oak Beam Cover Be Used to Hide an RSJ?

Yes. These hollow oak RSJ covers are especially designed to conceal steel beams used in structural openings or extensions, giving the appearance of traditional oak ceiling beams.

Is This Hollow Oak Beam Structural?

No. This product is decorative and designed to cover an existing structural beam. It should not be used as a load-bearing structural element.

How Do I Measure for an Oak RSJ Cover?

You need to measure the width, depth, and length of the steel beam, then allow sufficient internal clearance so the hollow oak beam fits comfortably over it. The external dimensions can then be chosen to achieve the desired visual proportions.

What Size Oak Beam Cover Do I Need for my RSJ?

The required size depends on the dimensions of the steel beam being covered and the aesthetic you want to achieve. Most customers choose a beam cover slightly larger than the RSJ to allow clearance and create the look of a substantial oak beam.

How is an Oak Beam Cover Installed?

Installation usually involves fixing timber battens around the steel beam and then securing the hollow oak beam cover over them. As the beam is hollow and lightweight compared to solid oak, installation is significantly easier.

Does a Hollow Oak Beam Look Like a Solid Oak Beam?

Yes. When manufactured from real oak and installed correctly, a hollow box beam provides the same visual appearance as a traditional solid oak beam, including natural grain, knots, and texture.
