Decorate your fireplace for Valentine’s Day

It’s almost that time of year again when red roses and heart-shaped chocolates seem to appear in ever-increasing numbers.

If you don’t fancy being elbow-to-elbow with other couples in over-packed (and priced) restaurants, a cosy night in with some good food and a romantic film in front of the fire is a great way to spend the evening with your other half.

If you really want to get into the spirit of things and make the night extra-special for your significant other, why not go the extra mile and invest in a few decorations?

An oak fireplace beam is a great place to declare your undying love

Whatever the season, you can decorate your mantelpiece to fit with the theme.

On valentines day, an oak mantelpiece is a perfect place to display romantic messages.

Simply buy one or two chalkboards (or, even better, get some chalkboard paint and make old picture frames into chalkboards) and cover them with some sweet quotes or personalised messages for your other half.

This is a really simple but effective way of showing that special someone how much you care.

Oak mantelpiece + candles = romantic

Putting a smattering of candles of different sizes onto your oak fireplace beam is a great way to add a little mood lighting to your evening for two.

Just make sure that you find suitable holders for your candles, or your evening may well go up in flames – literally!

Print out a photo of you and your other half together

Nowadays, many of us never see our photos other than on screens.

Printing out a photo of you and your other half, maybe on holiday or on a night out together and framing it, is a really sweet gesture. Then simply display it on your mantelpiece, for your partner to notice when they enter the room.

Warning: this is probably one to stay away from if you haven’t been together for long, as it could come across as a little creepy!

Show how much you love someone with home-made garlands

An oak fireplace beam is a perfect place to display all different types of garlands.

Whether it’s some dancing Santas at Christmas, daffodil shaped cut-outs at Easter or hearts for Valentine’s day, making your own can be even more satisfying.

All you’ll need is some cardboard, scissors, string and a hole punch and you can create something spectacular.

If you’re doing heart shapes, it can be helpful to cut out a paper template to work from. In order to get a perfectly symmetrical heart, just fold a piece of paper in half and draw half of a heart, with the point and top “bump” ending at the fold. Cut, then when you unfold the paper, you will have a heart template that is exactly the same on both sides.
