Christmas time, mistletoe and wine… and an oak beam. OK, so it doesn’t rhyme. At all. But we truly believe that there’s nothing more festive than decorating an oak fireplace mantel while listening to classic Christmas tunes.
After all, the image of chestnuts roasting on an open fire wouldn’t quite be the same without an oak mantel festooned with holly and ivy (if chestnuts aren’t your thing, no-one will notice if you substitute them for a few gooey marshmallows).

Your oak fireplace mantel is going to be in one of the warmest and driest areas of your home. So unless you want to be foraging for new foliage every few days, it’s best to stick with fake.
Fake foliage has come a long way over the past few years. Whereas we would see foliage for sale at one time which looked plastic and obviously fake, it is now actually quite difficult to tell it apart from the real thing, until you get up really close.
There’s also the added benefit with fake foliage that there won’t be any surprise creepies crawling out during the night.
And, as some foliage can be poisonous (especially ivy) to out four-legged friends, it may be better to stick with fake anyway.

This look is really easy to achieve. A few long twigs foraged from the garden then sprayed with gold or silver, look surprisingly cheerful when placed in a glass vase and bedecked with baubles.

Wind your lights around a few jars of candles and you have a really simple and inexpensive look that you could keep well into January and February, to cheer you up during those cold winter nights.
