How accurate are the dimensions?
Beams and shelves may be up to ½” smaller due to machining and sanding. Typically beams are approximately 1/4″ smaller than their original size. This information will be advised in the product description.
How do I fit my beam or shelf using the concealed brackets supplied?
Each order comes with fitting instructions. You can also select the installation tab on each product where you can find detailed instructions on how to fit your beam or shelf. If you need any further advice please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Can I fit my beam straight away?
We advise letting your beam to acclimatise to room temperate for around 2 weeks prior to installation. It should be taken out of the packaging while doing this to let it breath.
How do I keep my oak beam looking at it’s best?
You will not need to apply any additional finish to your beam straight away. Your beam may dull down slightly with age. To keep your beam looking new you can apply a small amount of wax polish or danish oil. Do not use cleaning products on the beams. Use a dry duster.
Will my beam crack once it’s installed?
Your beam may already have surface cracks which are to be expected as oak is a natural product. Once installed in a central heated house further cracks may develop which is considered completely normal and part of the charm. We recommend storing your beam for 2 weeks in your house prior to installation. Please also remove the beam from the box while it is acclimatising to the room If installing above a wood burning stove we recommend gradually increasing the temperature slowly over a period of 2 weeks or so.
Which side is the concealed bracket holes positioned?
Unless otherwise stated we drill the holes to accept the concealed brackets in the largest face. For example a 6”x4” beam will have the holes machined in a 6” side. We can of course machine the holes in the smaller side. Just add a note in the checkout confirming your requirements.
Can I fit my beam to a plasterboard wall?
It is possible to fit your beam to a plasterboard wall if you can locate the timber uprights however it is best to fit your beam to a brick or breeze block wall. If this isn’t possible, we would recommend a fascia beam no larger than 6″x3″. Plasterboard screws can be used in conjunction with keyhole brackets machined into the back of the beam.
Can I fit my shelf to a plasterboard wall?
We now have a range of shelves available that come complete with fixing suitable for plasterboard walls up to 15mm thick. You can check out the full range here.
Can you guarantee the beam/shelf will look like the pictures advertised?
As oak is a natural product is is impossible for colours to be a complete match each time. Oak also varies in regards to knots grains and cracks. Each piece is unique to you and your home.
I don’t want any cracks!
Although you could specify for us to select a beam with no cracks, we can not guarantee it will not crack once installed. Beams with a lot of cracks are good indication of a very dry beam. This means by selecting once with less or no cracks to begin with it may crack as it acclimatises to your home. If you are looking for a beam that does not crack at all then take a look at our kiln dried oak beam.
Are the beams/shelves waterproof?
No, the wax and stains we use are not waterproof. Coasters should be used when placing cups or vases on our products to avoid marks and stains. Any spillage should be wiped away immediately.
Can I use the shelves in a bathroom?
Although our shelves can be used in a bathroom, they are not waterproof. We can supply an additional water-resistant lacquer on our kiln dried oak shelves for an additional cost which will protect the shelves further in damp conditions. This is not completely waterproof so water should still be wiped away but the shelves will be much more durable.
